Welcome to the IoT Apocalypse – When Smart Cameras Knock Websites Offline
October 3, 2016 5:52 am

While most of the world was preparing for the weekend, a remotely controlled army of compromised smart devices was knocking websites off the Internet.

The past week saw two of the most aggressive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in the history of the Internet. One, targeting the security blog of journalist Brian Krebs, peaked at 665 megabits per second, while the other, directed at hosting company OVH, reached 1 Tbps, setting a new record in the industry.

This unexpected increase in throughput is clearly correlated with compromised IoT devices. According to OVH’s CTO Octave Klaba, the post-mortem logs reveal much of the blocking traffic came from close to 150,000 DVR cameras capable of leveraging 1.5Tbps in total.

Visit us at IMWORLD to learn how to properly secure your home and business infrastructure, how to keep your data safe against breaches or ransomware attacks and how to make sure that your compormised devices don’t end up knocking company or government websites offline.
