Imagine you have just arrived home from work. You wave your hand, and the lamp turns on, flashing the light in greeting. The home speaker begins to play music, but when you give it an exasperated look, it turns off. You make a coffee, but grimace because it’s too bitter. The coffee machine immediately offers to add sugar or milk.
Two things are conspicuously absent from this vision of a not-too-distant future. One is an appliance with switches and knobs, and the other is a smartphone full of remote control apps. Our research indicates that consumers are increasingly moving towards a paradigmatic shift in how they expect to interact with technology. Ever more things are becoming connected, but the complexities of how to control them all are a different matter. We therefore need technology to begin to operate on more human terms as we move from the smartphone era to a multidevice era. For this reason, our trends for 2018 and beyond focus on various aspects of more direct interaction between consumers and technology.
With 5G, connectivity is set to become ubiquitous. This might sound simple, but it involves a huge technology upgrade; devices must be able to relay complex human interaction data to cloud-based processing, and respond intuitively within milliseconds. The Internet of Things (IoT) must provide interoperability between all devices, and allow for mobility. Network availability also needs to be maintained, so that devices do not suddenly go offline and lose their human-like capabilities.

Kevin Warwick is Emeritus Professor at Reading and Coventry Universities. Prior to that he was Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) at Coventry University, England.
His main research areas are artificial intelligence, biomedical systems, robotics and cyborgs. Due to his research as a self-experimenter he is frequently referred to as the world’s first Cyborg. Kevin was born in Coventry, UK and left school to join British Telecom. He took his first degree at Aston University, followed by a PhD and research post at Imperial College London. He held positions at Oxford, Newcastle, Warwick and Reading Universities before joining Coventry.
Kevin is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IET who has published over 600 research papers. His experiments into implant technology led to him being featured as the cover story on the US magazine, ‘Wired’. He achieved the world’s first direct electronic communication between two human nervous systems, the basis for thought communication. Another project extended human sensory input to include ultrasonics. He also linked his nervous system with the internet in order to control a robot hand directly from his neural signals, across the Atlantic Ocean.
He has been awarded higher doctorates (DSc) by Imperial College and the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague. He has also been awarded 9 Honorary Doctorates. He received The IEE Senior Achievement Medal, the IET Mountbatten Medal and the Ellison-Cliffe Medal from the Royal Society of Medicine. In 2000 Kevin presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and in 2017 he presented the Paul B. Baltes Lecture at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Our future will be part human, part technology.
The presenter’s own experiments will be used to show how implant and electrode technology can be employed to create such cyborgs and to realise biological brains for robots. We can both enable human enhancement and diminish the effects of neural illnesses. In all cases the end result is to increase the abilities of the recipients.
An indication is given of a number of areas in which such technology has already had a profound effect, a key element being the need for a clear interface linking a biological brain directly with computer technology. We will see how, with this technology, your brain can be in one place and your body can be wherever the network allows.
By linking your brain with AI so many new abilities can be realised – new senses, new means of control and new ways to communicate.

Every large brand in the world understands by now how crucial UX design is. Over 75% of the biggest companies identify customer experience as their top priority. By building a great app you are literally within arms’ reach of your customer, and by optimising your omnichannel strategy you can follow them through a sophisticated data trail to give them an increasingly personalised offer.
But do we still have our priorities straight? As we become better at tracking the consumer through data, the EU makes it ever harder to do so without explicit consent. And the more apps there are in the app store, the fewer of them consumers actually use on a daily basis. While social media places an ever bigger demand on users’ attention, we are gradually realising how detrimental this turns out to be for our health and wellbeing.
